A special operation conducted by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-10) in South Keraniganj, on the outskirts of Dhaka, has led to the arrest of five individuals along with the recovery of 68 rounds of ammunition, officials confirmed.
The detainees comprise four men and one woman. Authorities also seized three mobile phones, which are believed to have been used for coordination within an alleged criminal network.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Md. Alamgir Hossain (50), Md. Sazib (27), Md. Opu Bepari (24), Md. Khokon (56), and Asha Akhter Jorna (20). According to RAB officials, the group was apprehended during a targeted raid based on intelligence suggesting the presence of illegal firearms and ammunition in the Paragandaria area under Shubhadya Union.
Speaking on the matter, RAB-10 Senior Assistant Director (Media) Md. Anwar Hossain stated that a specialised team had been conducting routine patrols and intelligence-driven operations in the South Keraniganj police jurisdiction as part of ongoing efforts to curb arms and narcotics-related crime. Acting on credible intelligence, the unit launched a coordinated operation at approximately 9:30 pm on 28 April.
During the raid, the five suspects were detained from a suspected hideout. A subsequent search of their persons and the surrounding area resulted in the recovery of 68 rounds of ammunition. Authorities also confiscated three mobile phones, which are now under forensic examination to determine their role in communication and coordination.
Preliminary interrogation suggests that the arrested individuals may be linked to an organised criminal network involved in the storage and possible transportation of illegal firearms and ammunition. However, officials stressed that these findings are still under verification, and a full-scale investigation is underway to determine the extent of their involvement and any associated accomplices.
All arrested persons are currently being processed for transfer to South Keraniganj Police Station, where formal legal proceedings will be initiated under applicable laws.
