Child Fatally Struck in Ashuganj Chemical Drum Explosion

A tragic industrial accident in the Ashuganj sub-district of Brahmanbaria has claimed the life of a twelve-year-old boy, sending shockwaves through the local community. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon (30 January) when an empty chemical drum exploded at a local workshop, fatally striking the young victim, Mohammad Raihan.

Circumstances of the Explosion

Raihan, the son of Akbar Hossain from Chanpur village in the neighbouring Raipura sub-district of Narsingdi, was employed at a workshop in the Lalpur Bazaar area. According to eyewitness accounts and preliminary reports, the tragedy unfolded as Raihan was walking past a neighbouring metal workshop owned by Loknath Das, 24.

At the time, Mr Das was reportedly using heavy machinery to cut open a discarded chemical drum. Crucially, the drum’s bung (stopper) remained tightly sealed. Industrial safety experts suggest that volatile chemical vapours had likely accumulated within the airtight container over a prolonged period. The friction and heat from the cutting tool acted as an ignition source, triggering a violent internal combustion that caused the metal vessel to rupture with catastrophic force.

Impact and Casualties

The explosion sent jagged fragments of the drum hurtling through the air. A large piece of the metal casing struck Raihan directly in the head, inflicting devastating injuries. Despite the swift intervention of local residents who rushed him toward Brahmanbaria District Sadar Hospital, the young boy succumbed to his injuries en route. The workshop owner, Mr Das, also sustained significant injuries during the blast and is currently receiving medical attention.

Investigative and Legal Response

The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ashuganj Police Station, Mohammad Shafiul Alam Chowdhury, has confirmed the details of the tragedy. Police personnel have visited the site to secure evidence and record witness statements.

“We are currently investigating the specific nature of the chemical previously stored in the drum to determine the exact cause of the ignition,” the OC remarked. He further noted that the boy’s remains have been moved to the district morgue for a post-mortem examination. While the incident is currently being treated as a workplace accident, the police have indicated that formal legal action will be pursued should the victim’s family file a written complaint regarding negligence.

This heartbreaking event underscores the dire need for stricter industrial safety regulations and the enforcement of child labour laws in regional manufacturing hubs, where hazardous tasks are often performed without adequate protective measures.
