Remembering Renowned Bangladeshi Nutritionist Siddika Kabir

Professor Siddika Kabir, celebrated for her unparalleled contributions to nutrition, health, and home economics in Bangladesh, remains a revered figure in the nation’s intellectual and public life. She was widely admired for her rare ability to translate complex scientific concepts into practical, accessible guidance for ordinary people. Her publications, particularly her books on cooking and nutrition, have reached countless households, raising awareness about healthy dietary practices and lifestyle choices.

Born on 7 May 1935 in the historic Mokim Bazar of Old Dhaka, Siddika Kabir grew up in a culturally rich and academically stimulating environment. Her father, Maulvi Ahmedullah, was among the early graduates of the Faculty of Science at Dhaka University and later served as a science teacher at Dhaka Collegiate School. Her mother, Syeda Hasina Khatun, managed the household with dedication. This environment of intellectual rigor and discipline profoundly shaped her worldview and instilled in her a lifelong commitment to education and public service.

In November 1972, she married banker Syed Ali Kabir, a union that offered strong support for both her professional and social initiatives.

Siddika Kabir began her formal education at Eden College, excelling in the Science Faculty at the Intermediate level. She went on to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics at Dhaka University. During her first year, she gained early media experience as a part-time broadcaster at the then Pakistan Radio (now Bangladesh Betar). She later taught at Viqarunnisa Noon School and served as a mathematics lecturer at Eden College.

Awarded a Ford Foundation scholarship, she pursued higher studies in the United States, earning a Master’s degree in Food and Nutrition Science from Oklahoma State University in 1963. Upon returning to Bangladesh, she devoted herself to advancing nutrition and public health. She began her academic career as an Assistant Professor at Azimpur Home Economics College and retired in 1993. Beyond her formal academic duties, she made notable contributions to women’s health, nutritional awareness, and family welfare.

Professor Siddika Kabir passed away on 31 January 2012 at Square Hospital in Dhaka. Her teachings, writings, and public service continue to inspire millions across the country, keeping her legacy alive.
