Mother flees with lover after killing three-year-old child

In a chilling case that has shocked Gopalganj, a 25-year-old mother, Setu Begum, has been accused of murdering her three-year-old daughter in the wake of an extramarital affair. The child’s body was recovered twenty days after the alleged killing, prompting widespread outrage. Police have since arrested Setu Begum in connection with the case.

The gruesome discovery was made on Saturday, 7 February, at the home of Setu Begum’s husband, Rubel Sheikh, in Gobra Nilaramath, Gopalganj Sadar. The police found the body of the child, identified as Faria, who had reportedly been strangled with a scarf on 17 January. According to investigators, the murder was premeditated and carried out with the assistance of Setu Begum’s extramarital partner.

According to police reports, Setu Begum had met Miraj Molla, a resident of Badaihiat village under Sadarpur police station in Faridpur district, on TikTok approximately six months ago. The two became romantically involved, and the affair escalated over time. On the evening of 17 January, Setu Begum, allegedly with the help of her lover, strangled her daughter with a scarf and concealed the body in a tank at her home.

Following the incident, Setu Begum absconded with her lover, Rubel Sheikh, leaving her daughter’s body behind. After nineteen days, her lover reportedly abandoned her, and she returned to her father’s house. Upon questioning by family members, Setu Begum confessed to the crime, admitting that she had killed her daughter and hidden the body in the tank with the assistance of her lover. Her family subsequently handed her over to Gopalganj Sadar police, who recovered the child’s body twenty days after the murder.

Confirming the incident, the Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) of Gopalganj stated that the body had been sent to the 250-bed Gopalganj General Hospital for post-mortem examination. “Our legal procedures are ongoing,” the officer added.
