Child Killed in Crocodile Attack

A tragic incident in southern Bangladesh has claimed the life of a seven-year-old girl after she was attacked by a crocodile in a pond adjacent to the shrine of Khan Jahan Ali in Bagerhat. The fatal episode occurred on Monday night and concluded with the recovery of her body early Tuesday morning following an extensive overnight search operation. The incident has left the local community in deep grief and raised serious concerns over public safety in the area.

According to local accounts, the child, identified as Fatema Akter (7), had entered the women’s bathing ghat on the eastern side of the pond around 8:30 p.m. on Monday. The pond, situated near the historically significant Khan Jahan Ali Shrine, is known to contain at least one resident crocodile, which is believed to have been responsible for the attack.

Witnesses reported that the crocodile suddenly emerged from the water and seized the child, dragging her underwater within moments. Despite the presence of a large number of people at the ghat, panic quickly spread, and no immediate rescue attempt was made due to fear of further attacks.

Following the incident, local residents, shrine authorities, firefighters, police personnel, and volunteers launched a coordinated search operation using boats and other equipment. The search continued throughout the night under challenging conditions, with repeated efforts to locate the child in the murky waters of the pond.

At dawn on Tuesday, rescuers recovered the girl’s body near the women’s bathing area. The discovery sparked scenes of intense mourning, with cries and distress echoing throughout the locality. Eyewitnesses confirmed that the body bore multiple bite marks consistent with a crocodile attack.

A local shopkeeper stated that although villagers attempted to assist immediately after the incident, the rapidity of the attack made any rescue impossible. Shrine caretaker Faqir Tariqul Islam confirmed that the body had been recovered and placed temporarily near the bathing area pending administrative procedures.

The district administration has stated that the child came from a severely disadvantaged background. Her mother is reportedly mentally unwell and lives a transient life. In response, authorities have announced that all expenses related to the burial will be borne by the government.
