Bangladesh national cricket team’s seasoned batsman, Mushfiqur Rahim, has found himself stranded in Saudi Arabia while returning home from performing Umrah. He was scheduled to fly back last Saturday, but heightened tensions between the United States and Israel unexpectedly turned Jeddah’s King Abdulaziz International Airport into a sensitive zone, preventing him and numerous other passengers from boarding their flights.
Mushfiq had embarked on his journey to Bangladesh via Dubai aboard Emirates Airlines flight EK 0806. However, due to security concerns arising from ongoing geopolitical tensions involving the US, Israel, and Iran, the aircraft was diverted back to Jeddah. This left thousands of travellers, including Mushfiq, temporarily stranded at the airport.
Sharing his ordeal on social media, Mushfiq wrote: “This morning we departed from Jeddah towards Dubai on flight EK 0806. But due to the ongoing tensions between the US, Israel, and Iran, the flight was returned to Jeddah. I am here with thousands of other passengers. Only Allah knows when and how we will get back to Dhaka. Please pray for us.”
Bangladesh’s State Minister for Youth and Sports, Aminul Haque, reassured the public, confirming that Mushfiqur Rahim is in good health and that efforts are underway to ensure his safe return. Speaking to the media, the minister stated, “I am personally monitoring the situation. I have already spoken to Mushfiqur Rahim. After discussions with our cricket board, we expect that he should be able to return home tomorrow (Monday) morning.”
The minister also emphasised that the government continues to extend full support to other Bangladeshi nationals and athletes stranded abroad under similar circumstances, wishing everyone a safe return.
