Four solvent individuals, including a local leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), have returned government relief materials and cash grants in Aditmari Upazila, Lalmonirhat. The move follows intense public backlash after it was revealed that the aid, intended for the destitute, had been allocated to relatively affluent households.

Background of the Allocation
The relief distribution was initiated following damage caused by recent Nor’wester storms and hailstorms in the region. The government provides corrugated iron (CI) sheets and financial assistance to help impoverished families rebuild their homes after natural disasters. To receive this aid, individuals must submit formal applications to the Upazila administration, which are then processed through a verification cycle.
In this instance, the four individuals from Ward No. 8 of Bhadai Union applied for assistance, claiming significant storm damage. Upon approval, each family received one bundle of CI sheets and a cash grant of 3,000 BDT.
Public Outcry and Administrative Action
The controversy began when local residents took to social media to highlight the financial status of the recipients. Critics pointed out that the beneficiaries were solvent and did not meet the criteria for emergency humanitarian aid. As the information spread, the Upazila administration intervened.
Following a directive from the authorities, the recipients returned the materials and funds between last Tuesday and Thursday. The Aditmari Upazila Project Implementation Office confirmed that the returned items have been placed back into the government inventory.

Statements from the Involved Parties
Dadhi Prasad Barman, the local BNP leader, stated that he had applied for assistance because his tin-roofed house was damaged during the recent hailstorm. Despite being granted the aid, he chose to return it following the administrative request.
Shankar Kumar Ray noted that “financial conditions are not always stable,” suggesting that his current situation justified the application. He confirmed he returned the aid upon instructions from the granting authorities. Similarly, Gobinda Ray, the husband of recipient Golapi Rani, expressed frustration, stating that while they received the allocation through a formal application, they returned it due to social criticism. He remarked that observers often judge based on outward appearances without understanding a family’s internal struggles.
Official Response
Enamul Haque, the Aditmari Upazila Project Implementation Officer, stated that the beneficiaries acknowledged the error and voluntarily returned the relief.
The Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), Bidhan Kanti Halder, confirmed the recovery of the assets. He emphasized that the administration has issued strict instructions to the relevant officials to be more vigilant during the selection and verification process to ensure that government resources reach only the most vulnerable populations in the future.
