Transport Fare Hike Sparks Labour Protest

Workers at the Ishwardi Export Processing Zone (EPZ) in Pabna staged a one-hour protest on Saturday (9 May), locking the main gate of the facility in response to an increase in transport fares. The demonstration caused traffic congestion of approximately one kilometre on both sides of the adjacent roads.

The protesting workers stated that they are employed at the EPZ on modest wages and rely on limited incomes to manage household expenses. They alleged that transport operators serving the route have repeatedly increased fares, placing additional financial pressure on them. According to the workers, a significant portion of their salaries is now being spent solely on commuting costs, leaving little for other essential needs.

Workers from Bagha and Charghat areas of Rajshahi, including Shahanaj Parvin, Survi Khatun, Monira, and Sufia Khatun, said they travel together in a group using bus services. They explained that their current monthly fare was 1,500 taka per person, which has now been increased to 1,800 taka from the coming month. They further stated that some workers who previously paid 2,000 taka per month are now being asked to pay 2,300 taka.

The workers demanded the withdrawal of what they described as arbitrary and unjustified fare increases.

Relevant authorities and representatives provided responses regarding the situation. According to Inspector Md. Monirul Islam, in-charge of the EPZ police outpost, discussions are ongoing with transport owners regarding the workers’ demands, and efforts are being made to resolve the issue.

ABM Shahidul Islam, Executive Director of the Ishwardi EPZ, stated that there had been temporary dissatisfaction among workers concerning certain demands and the fare increase. He added that discussions have been held with worker representatives and their concerns are being considered seriously.
