A new comparison has emerged in European youth football, with Egyptian forward Hamza Abdelkarim attracting attention for his performances at Barcelona’s under-19 side. The 18-year-old striker has been labelled by some observers as the “Egyptian Haaland”, largely due to his physical profile, aerial ability, and goal-scoring style.
In recent years, football has frequently seen young prospects described as the “new” version of established stars, from Pelé and Diego Maradona to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Now, similar comparisons are being drawn with Norwegian striker Erling Haaland, with Hamza becoming the latest player to receive such a nickname.
Hamza currently plays for Barcelona Under-19 and recently drew particular attention during a Spanish Youth Honour Division match against Monte Carlo. Barcelona secured a commanding 9-0 victory, with Hamza scoring a hat-trick. Notably, all three goals came from headers, highlighting what has quickly become one of his defining strengths.
Barcelona have already secured the Under-19 league title this season. The team’s focus has now shifted to the Champions Cup, where Barcelona will begin their campaign from the quarter-final stage. The remaining fixtures of the youth season will include two-legged quarter-finals, followed by the semi-finals and final, placing additional focus on several emerging talents, including Hamza.
The forward joined Barcelona Under-19 on loan from Egyptian club Al Ahly on 1 February this year. Under the terms of the agreement, Barcelona have the option to sign him permanently for €2 million at the end of the season.
His start in Spain was not entirely smooth. Administrative complications initially limited his progress, and he later suffered an injury that delayed his integration into the squad. However, following his return, he has quickly established himself as a notable attacking option.
So far, Hamza has scored four goals for Barcelona’s youth side, with all four coming from headers. This unusual statistic has further strengthened comparisons with Haaland, who is similarly recognised for his physical presence and finishing ability inside the penalty area.
Hamza is described as a classic number nine striker. He is predominantly left-footed and has already demonstrated an ability to occupy defenders effectively. Like traditional centre-forwards, his main strength lies in finishing, particularly inside the box. Alongside his footwork, his aerial efficiency has become a major asset.
Standing at 6ft 1in, Hamza’s physical profile adds to his effectiveness in attacking set pieces and crosses.

Barcelona’s senior squad is currently led in attack by Robert Lewandowski, whose age and contract situation have led to discussions about the club’s long-term options in the centre-forward role.
Meanwhile, Barcelona youth academy La Masia spokesperson Pau Campania has stated that no official announcement has yet been made regarding the activation of Hamza’s buyout clause. Speaking on the Egyptian programme Modern Sports, Campania said: “If there is anything to announce, it will be communicated officially.
“In the coming days, Hamza Abdelkarim’s situation will be discussed. For now, we are focused on celebrating the title and planning for the future.”
