Canine Attacks Leave Fifty Injured in Sakhipur

At least 50 people were injured over a two-day period following a series of dog attacks in Sakhipur, under Tangail district. Among the injured, one person was referred to the Infectious Diseases Hospital in Mohakhali, Dhaka. The incidents occurred on Sunday and Monday across Sakhipur Municipality and Kalia Union.

According to local residents, the situation began on Sunday around 2:00 pm in Debolchala village of Kalia Union. A dog reportedly bit several people, including Abdur Rashid, as well as women and children. The animal then moved towards Sakhipur municipal town, continuing its attacks. It is reported that from Andhi area to Uttar Mor, at least 20 individuals were bitten.

Later the same day, around 10:00 pm, the dog moved through the Kaharta village area towards Kochua locality. On Monday morning, further attacks were reported in Kalia, Ghonarchala, and Damiya areas, where several women and children were again bitten.

Medical records indicate that among the injured are at least 9 children and 10 women. Over the two days, 45 of the injured received treatment at Sakhipur Upazila Health Complex, while others were treated at various private clinics. One critically injured patient, Abdur Rashid, was transferred to the Infectious Diseases Hospital in Mohakhali, Dhaka. A medical officer at the Upazila Health Complex’s emergency department, Hafizur Rahman, stated that his condition is serious.

On Monday morning at around 10:30 am, Khondoker Habibur from Ghonarchala village described the incident while receiving treatment at the hospital. He said that while returning home after taking his granddaughter to school, a dog suddenly attacked him without warning. He added that his cries attracted others, but the animal also attacked those who came to assist.

Another victim from the same village, Meherun Begum, stated that she was holding her granddaughter when the dog leapt and bit the child. When she attempted to protect the child, she was also bitten.

At the Upazila Health Complex, medical staff were observed managing a high influx of patients. Wounds were washed with soap and water before administering vaccinations. Emergency physician Shamina Ahmed stated that each patient had been bitten in multiple areas and that the wounds were deep. She confirmed that initial treatment had been provided to children, elderly men, and women among the injured.
