Vietnamese police have uncovered a coordinated cat theft network, rescuing more than 400 live cats that were being kept in cages for slaughter and arresting nine individuals in connection with the operation. The crackdown was carried out by the police of Ho Chi Minh City in coordination with raids across multiple concealed locations in southern Vietnam.
During the operation, approximately 80 dead animals preserved in ice were also seized. In addition, a further 21 cats were recovered from a separate facility linked to the same network. According to local media reports and police sources, the coordinated raids took place on Thursday (11 June) across several hidden sites in both Tây Ninh Province and Ho Chi Minh City.
Ho Chi Minh City police stated that the group had been operating for approximately three years. The suspects reportedly admitted to setting traps to steal domestic cats from local residents, which were then sold to meat traders every two to three days.
The case has drawn attention from animal welfare organisations, including Humane World for Animals, which reported that 40 of the rescued cats had already been returned to their owners. The organisation also noted that several of the animals died even after rescue due to prolonged neglect and poor conditions.
Vietnamese law permits the consumption of dog and cat meat; however, sellers are required to provide proof of legal sourcing and appropriate documentation for the animals. Authorities emphasised that compliance with these requirements is mandatory for trade.
According to data cited by the animal welfare organisation, an estimated one million cats and five million dogs are stolen and trafficked annually in Vietnam for meat consumption. However, public attitudes are shifting, particularly among younger generations and pet owners, with growing opposition to the trade.
Police have confirmed that investigations into the network remain ongoing. Residents who have recently lost pet cats have been urged to contact authorities to assist in identifying and reclaiming animals recovered during the raids.
