The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has issued a warning indicating the likelihood of temporary gusty weather conditions, including thunderstorms and rain, affecting at least ten regions of the country by early afternoon on Wednesday (17 June). The alert specifically highlights the possibility of wind speeds reaching up to 60 kilometres per hour in several areas, accompanied by rainfall or thunderstorm activity.
According to the advisory issued at 1:00 pm for the country’s internal river ports, weather conditions may become unstable due to active convective activity. The department stated that areas across northern, north-western, north-eastern, and south-eastern parts of the country may experience sudden wind gusts ranging between 45 and 60 km/h, originating from the east or south-east direction, along with temporary rain or thunder-showers.
The regions included in the warning are Rangpur, Dinajpur, Bogura, Tangail, Mymensingh, Cumilla, Noakhali, Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, and Sylhet. These areas are expected to remain under the influence of unstable atmospheric conditions during the warning period.
The river ports in these regions have been advised to hoist Signal No. 1 as a precautionary measure. This signal indicates that caution is required due to the possibility of sudden adverse weather, particularly for small and medium-sized vessels operating in inland waterways.
| Region | Wind Speed | Wind Direction | Weather Condition | Advisory |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rangpur | 45–60 km/h | East/South-East | Rain/Thunderstorms with gusts | Signal No. 1 |
| Dinajpur | 45–60 km/h | East/South-East | Rain/Thunderstorms with gusts | Signal No. 1 |

| Sylhet | 45–60 km/h | East/South-East | Rain/Thunderstorms with gusts | Signal No. 1 |
The meteorological office’s advisory is primarily aimed at ensuring the safety of river navigation and minimising disruption to inland transport. Sudden gusty winds and thunderstorms during this period may reduce visibility and create hazardous conditions for vessels operating on rivers and estuaries.
Authorities have urged relevant river port operators and water transport users to exercise caution and remain attentive to updated weather bulletins throughout the warning period. The signal may be revised depending on further developments in atmospheric conditions.
