Child’s Death Sparks Deadly Mob Attack

A seven-year-old girl’s body has been recovered in Manikganj, triggering widespread unrest that culminated in a fatal mob assault on suspected individuals. The incident, which unfolded in Bonparil South Para of Hatipara ইউনিয়ন under Manikganj Sadar, has drawn significant public attention and raised concerns over both violent crime and vigilante justice.

According to police and local sources, the child, identified as Atika Akter, a Class One pupil and daughter of Dudul Mia and Arifa Akter, went missing on the afternoon of 16 April at approximately 4:00 pm. She had reportedly attended a nearby pre-wedding অনুষ্ঠান, where she was playing with other children. At some point during the gathering, she disappeared.

Family members initially conducted a local search before escalating efforts through public announcements and social media outreach. As concern grew, residents joined the search. A breakthrough came when a cousin of the victim, Ali, reported having seen her walking with a neighbouring teenager named Naim.

Based on this information, locals detained and questioned Naim, who reportedly indicated a nearby maize field. At around 10:00 pm the same night, residents discovered Atika’s body in that field. Her hands and feet were found bound, intensifying suspicions of foul play.

Preliminary assumptions suggest that the motive behind the killing may have been robbery, particularly involving the victim’s jewellery. However, authorities emphasised that the exact cause of death and motive will only be confirmed following a post-mortem examination.

The recovery of the body triggered immediate outrage. Enraged স্থানীয় residents attacked the homes of those suspected and physically assaulted several individuals.
