A 15-year-old boy has died and another teenager has been seriously injured following a motorbike crash in the Panagao Bazaar area of South Keraniganj, on the outskirts of the capital. The tragic incident occurred on Thursday night (16 April), leaving the local community in shock and raising fresh concerns about road safety among adolescents.
The deceased has been identified as Nirab, son of Alamin Mia from Danga village in Matlab Upazila of Chandpur district. According to family sources, Nirab had been staying in South Keraniganj for work-related reasons and was engaged in daily labour to support his livelihood. His sudden death has cast a deep shadow of grief over his family, who had already been facing financial hardship.
Eyewitnesses reported that Nirab and a friend were riding a motorcycle for leisure when the accident took place. As they reached the Panagao Bazaar area, the rider reportedly lost control of the vehicle. The motorcycle then collided violently with a roadside utility pole. Both teenagers were thrown off and sustained severe injuries.
Local residents quickly rushed to the scene and arranged for their transportation to hospital. Nirab was first taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition, where attending doctors declared him dead shortly after arrival. The other teenager was admitted to Mitford Hospital and remains under treatment. Medical staff have described his condition as serious, and he is currently under close observation.
Authorities at Dhaka Medical College Hospital confirmed that the body has been kept in the hospital morgue for post-mortem examination. Police have been informed, and legal procedures are underway before the body is released to the family.
The incident has once again highlighted the persistent risks associated with underage riding and motorcycle use on busy urban and peri-urban roads. Road safety experts have long warned that a lack of helmet use, inadequate training, and excessive speed significantly increase the likelihood of fatal accidents, particularly among teenagers who are not legally permitted to operate such vehicles.
Community members have also expressed concern over the growing tendency of adolescents to ride motorcycles without proper safety measures. Calls have been made for stricter enforcement of traffic laws, improved public awareness campaigns, and greater parental supervision to prevent similar tragedies.
