A municipal councillor has been killed and another man critically injured in a road traffic accident on the Barishal–Khulna regional highway in the Jhalokathi district of southern Bangladesh.
The deceased has been identified as Humayun Kabir Sagar, 37, a councillor of Ward No. 9 under Jhalokathi Municipality. The injured passenger, identified as Sohel, a local Thai goods trader, is currently receiving treatment at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal, where doctors have described his condition as serious.
The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon in the Rayapur area of Nalchity upazila. According to police and eyewitness accounts, the two men were travelling by motorcycle from Barishal towards Jhalokathi when the vehicle reportedly lost control. The motorcycle subsequently veered off the road and collided with a roadside tree with significant force, leaving both riders severely injured.
Local residents quickly responded to the scene and assisted in rescuing the injured men. They were transported to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital shortly afterwards. On arrival, attending physicians pronounced Councillor Sagar dead, while the other passenger was admitted for emergency treatment due to critical injuries.
Following the incident, grief spread across Jhalokathi town as news of Sagar’s death circulated. Community members and local political figures expressed shock at the sudden loss of a serving municipal representative.
Police from Nalchity Police Station, led by Inspector (Investigation) Ali Ashraf, confirmed that officers reached the crash site shortly after receiving information. The area was inspected, and preliminary findings were gathered with the assistance of local witnesses. Authorities also confirmed that the injured victim was shifted to hospital in critical condition.
Officials have not yet confirmed whether mechanical failure, excessive speed, or loss of control due to road conditions contributed to the crash. An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident.
