The Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Dhaka has acquitted professional cricketer Nasir Hossain and his wife, Tamima Sultana Tammi, of all charges concerning the alleged illegality of their marriage. Magistrate Joshita Islam delivered the final judgement at midday on Wednesday, 10 June 2026. The verdict was formally confirmed to members of the press by Ashutosh Bhowmik, a bench assistant attached to the court.
Following the acquittal, the prosecution’s legal representative, Ishrat Hasan, voiced strong objections to the court’s findings. She informed journalists that the plaintiff intends to contest the ruling by lodging an official appeal with a higher judicial authority.
Procedural Context and Initial Accusations
The legal dispute was initiated by Rakib Hossain, the former husband of Tamima Sultana. According to the original deposition records, Rakib Hossain had married Tamima on 26 February 2011, and the couple share a daughter. The core of Rakib’s legal complaint alleged that Tamima had entered into a marriage contract with cricketer Nasir Hossain before her first marriage had been legally dissolved under existing statutory laws.
The matter became a subject of significant public debate in February 2021 when photographs documenting Nasir and Tamima’s wedding ceremony circulated widely across social media networks. On 24 February 2021, Rakib Hossain filed a formal criminal complaint with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Dhaka. Throughout the proceedings, both Nasir and Tamima consistently denied any wrongdoing, stating that their union was entirely lawful and had occurred only after her previous marriage had been dissolved in accordance with statutory requirements.
Timeline of the Judicial Investigation
Following a detailed investigation, the appointed inquiry officer, Sheikh Mizanur Rahman, submitted a formal report to the court on 30 September 2021, recommending the prosecution of Nasir Hossain, Tamima Sultana, and her mother, Sumi Akhter.
On 9 February 2022, the court framed formal charges against Nasir and Tamima to commence the trial, whilst simultaneously dismissing all allegations against Sumi Akhter. The defendants subsequently filed a revision petition challenging the indictment, which was rejected by the court on 28 February 2023.
The evidentiary phase of the trial began on 20 March 2023, with the court subsequently recording testimonies from ten separate prosecution witnesses. The deposition process concluded on 16 April 2025. In March 2026, the court held a self-defence hearing, during which Tamima provided testimony as a defence witness. Following the completion of closing arguments by both legal teams on 6 May 2026, the court deferred the matter to 10 June 2026 for the final delivery of the verdict.
Closing Submissions and Final Decision
During the final hearings, the plaintiff’s counsel, Ishrat Hasan, contended that the evidence presented during the trial conclusively proved the charges, arguing that the defendants should face statutory penalties. Conversely, Advocate Azizur Rahman Dulu, representing Nasir Hossain, and Advocate Mosleh Uddin Jasim, representing Tamima Sultana, rejected the claims completely and requested a full acquittal.
After assessing the gathered evidence and witness testimonies, the court concluded that the prosecution had failed to substantiate the allegations beyond reasonable doubt, resulting in the absolute acquittal of both Nasir Hossain and Tamima Sultana.
