Head-on Bus Crash Kills Student

A fatal road collision on the busy Chittagong–Cox’s Bazar highway has claimed the life of a 19-year-old college student, following a head-on crash between two passenger buses in the early hours of Tuesday. The incident occurred around 7:30am near the Chunti Police Outpost area along the highway in Lohagara Upazila, sending shockwaves through the local community and raising renewed concerns over road safety standards.

The deceased, Sumaia Jannat (19), was a first-year honours student at Chattogram Women’s College. She was the daughter of Maulana Arifur Rahman and resided in the Puihchhari Union area of Banshkhali Upazila. Family members described her as a diligent and ambitious student with aspirations of completing higher education and contributing meaningfully to society.

According to eyewitness accounts, one bus travelling towards Chattogram and another heading towards Cox’s Bazar were both moving at speed when they collided almost head-on. The impact was severe, causing both vehicles to veer off the roadway. Panic spread among passengers as screams and chaos followed the crash. Local residents and passers-by rushed to the scene and began rescue operations before emergency services arrived.

Sumaia Jannat sustained critical injuries in the collision. She was immediately transported to Lohagara Trauma Centre, where attending physicians declared her dead on arrival. Medical staff confirmed that her injuries were too severe for any life-saving intervention.

A second passenger was also injured in the accident and received initial treatment locally. However, details regarding the extent of the injuries have not been fully disclosed.

Police from the local highway station responded swiftly, securing the crash site and removing the damaged vehicles from the road to restore traffic flow. Authorities have stated that a formal investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the collision, including whether speeding, reckless driving, or mechanical failure played a role.
