The weather office has forecast rain and thunderstorms in Dhaka by midday, offering possible relief from the humid and uncomfortable conditions that have persisted across the capital.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, on Monday, 11 May, the sky over Dhaka and surrounding areas is expected to remain partly cloudy to temporarily cloudy until 1:00 pm. During this period, there is a likelihood of rainfall or thundershowers, accompanied in some places by lightning activity.
The forecast also stated that winds may blow from the south or south-east at a speed of 10 to 15 kilometres per hour in Dhaka and nearby areas throughout the day.
The minimum temperature recorded in the capital on Monday morning was 22.5 degrees Celsius. The Met Office said daytime temperatures are likely to remain nearly unchanged despite the expected rainfall, indicating that while showers may provide short-term relief, a significant drop in temperature is not anticipated immediately.
In a separate warning issued for inland river ports, the weather department advised that several coastal and adjoining districts could experience temporary gusty or squally weather conditions.
The affected regions include Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar. In these areas, winds from the west or north-west may blow at speeds ranging from 45 to 60 kilometres per hour. These conditions could also be accompanied by rain or thundershowers, with a risk of lightning during periods of active weather.
As a precaution, inland river ports in the mentioned districts have been instructed to display local cautionary signal number one.
Meteorologists also noted that a low-pressure area may form over the south-west Bay of Bengal and adjacent waters within Monday. The possible formation of this weather system could enhance moisture flow and atmospheric instability over Bangladesh, increasing the likelihood of rain and thunderstorms in several parts of the country over the coming days.
Such low-pressure systems are common during the pre-monsoon transition period and often contribute to unstable weather patterns, particularly in coastal and low-lying regions.
