“The ambassadors those are stationed here, they know their code of conduct … they will follow it and this is what expected,” he told at a briefing while responding to a question at foreign ministry here.  Bangladesh, according to the foreign minister, is a sovereign, independent nation and is no longer under the control of any other nation. He said, “They (diplomats) should understand that we are no longer a colony. Dr. Momen accused some areas in the nation of visiting foreign diplomats to talk about and receive advice on Bangladesh’s internal issues.

“It’s very unfortunate, this culture needs to be changed … today or tomorrow we have to change this culture,” he said.

Last week, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam remarked that if any foreign diplomat stationed here crossed the border, the government would take the proper action. The remarks were made in response to recent comments made on internal issues by diplomats from several nations stationed in Dhaka that are in violation of the Vienna Convention’s diplomatic standards. The Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961, Article 41 paragraph 1, expressly prohibits diplomats from interfering in the internal affairs of the receiving state and reminds them to respect its laws and regulations.
