Dola’s Pahela Baishakh Memories

Renowned vocalist Dola Rahman has reflected on her cherished childhood memories of Pahela Baishakh, the Bengali New Year, describing it as far more than a mere annual celebration. Despite her recent hectic schedule recording multiple songs for Eid releases, she shared that the essence of Baishakh remains deeply embedded in her personal and artistic life.

According to Dola, Pahela Baishakh represents a fusion of family tradition, cultural practice, and musical upbringing. She recalls growing up in a large joint family where the festival was celebrated in a warm, intimate domestic atmosphere. Relatives would gather in abundance, turning the household into a vibrant space filled with laughter, music, dance, and traditional games. These home-based festivities created an atmosphere of unity and joy that, she says, remains unforgettable even today.

Afternoons during her childhood were often marked by family outings to local fairs, which formed an essential part of the celebration. Reflecting on the contrast between past and present celebrations, Dola observes that earlier festivities began with traditional breakfasts featuring items such as panta bhat, ilish, chira, yoghurt, and sweets, followed by visits to fairs and extended family gatherings. Today, although such routines are less frequent due to time constraints, she continues to preserve their memory with affection.

She also expressed a particular fondness for sweets, stating that her celebration of Pahela Baishakh feels incomplete without Porabari-style chamcham. Rasgulla remains another favourite delicacy, adding sweetness to her festive nostalgia.
