Police have arrested Nur Alam (56), a close associate of former Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi and a leader of the Awami League, during a raid in Rangpur.
The arrest was made on Monday at around 9:45 pm from the Mahiganj area of Rangpur city. According to law enforcement sources, the operation was conducted as part of a coordinated crackdown in the locality.
Nur Alam is known to be the general secretary of the Kalayani Union unit of the Awami League in Pirgachha Upazila. He was also previously removed from his position as chairman of the No. 1 Kalayani Union Parishad. Locally, he has been identified as a close political associate of former Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi and is reportedly referred to as his “adopted son” in the area.
Police stated that following the political changeover, Nur Alam had been in hiding. Authorities further confirmed that several cases have been filed against him, including allegations of murder and attempted murder linked to incidents during the anti-discrimination student movement.
After his arrest, he was taken into custody by the Mahiganj Metropolitan Police Station. Law enforcement officials have indicated that he will be produced before a court on Tuesday, 5 May.
