Explosion Near Jakarta School Injures Dozens

An explosion near a high school in Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta, left 54 people injured on Friday, authorities confirmed, as investigators worked to determine the cause of the blast.

Jakarta Police Chief Asep Edi Suheri told reporters that the explosion occurred “in the vicinity” of the school, located in a densely populated area of the city. “The initial data we have received indicates that there are approximately 54 individuals affected,” he said during a press briefing broadcast by Kompas TV.

Of those injured, some sustained minor wounds, others moderate injuries, and several had already been discharged. “Several victims received treatment on-site, while others were transported to nearby hospitals for further care,” Asep added.

Authorities swiftly cordoned off the area, deploying bomb disposal units and forensic teams to examine the scene. Police officers were seen combing through debris, collecting evidence, and documenting the site as part of an ongoing investigation.

“We are still investigating, as this incident just occurred,” Asep stated, emphasising that the cause of the explosion had not yet been determined. Emergency services remained on high alert throughout the afternoon as officials sought to establish whether the blast was accidental or deliberate.

In addition to securing the site, police set up information centres at two nearby hospitals to assist relatives in locating injured victims.

Local residents reported hearing a loud bang, followed by chaotic scenes as bystanders rushed to help those affected. Eyewitnesses described the area near the school as “panic-stricken” in the immediate aftermath, though fortunately, no fatalities have been reported so far.
