A tragic road traffic collision on the Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar highway in the Chandanaish area has claimed one life and left four others injured after a passenger-carrying three-wheeler was struck by a speeding goods truck near a fuel station on Monday night.
According to local witnesses and police reports, the accident occurred at approximately 9:30 pm in front of the Makkah petrol pump along the busy highway stretch within Chandanaish Upazila. A locally known “nosimon” vehicle, being used to transport both goods and labourers, was travelling along the road when a fast-moving freight truck approached from behind and rammed into it with significant force.
The impact of the collision was severe enough to throw the nosimon off balance, causing it to skid and overturn on the roadway. Five workers on board sustained critical injuries in the crash.
Emergency responders and bystanders quickly rushed the victims to the Chandanaish Upazila Health Complex. On duty physician Dr Shuvo Deb confirmed that one of the injured workers, Arman Hossain Sheikh (35), was declared dead upon arrival. He was identified as the son of Mokhles Sheikh from Nazirpur upazila in Pirojpur district.
One of the injured workers, identified as Ashik, was reported to be in a critical condition and was subsequently transferred to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. The remaining three injured workers are currently receiving care at the local health facility, where doctors say their condition has shown signs of gradual improvement.
Police from the Dohazari Highway Station stated that they reached the scene shortly after receiving reports of the crash. Sub-Inspector Ruhul Amin confirmed that the freight truck struck the nosimon from behind, leading to the fatal incident. Both vehicles involved in the collision have been seized for further investigation.
Authorities and local residents have expressed concern over the persistent issue of speeding heavy vehicles on this highway segment. Many villagers believe that inadequate enforcement of traffic regulations and the unchecked movement of overloaded freight vehicles continue to make this route highly dangerous for smaller and slower transport.
The incident has cast a shadow of grief over the local community, particularly in the victim’s home district, where family members are mourning his sudden death. Discussions have also emerged regarding the adequacy of emergency response and the need for stronger road safety measures along this vital transport corridor.
