A fatal stabbing incident in the Patiya upazila of Chattogram has resulted in the death of a 35-year-old man and left another seriously injured. The assault occurred on Tuesday evening in the West Paad area of Joulur Dighi. Following the incident, local residents detained a suspect, who was subsequently handed over to the police after being subjected to a mob beating.
Details of the Attack
The deceased has been identified as Pankaj Sheel, 35, son of Milan Sheel, residing in Chakrashala village under the Kachuai union of Patiya upazila. The injured individual is Tilak Chakraborty, 35, son of Durgapada Chakraborty, from the same village. Mr Chakraborty is currently receiving medical treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH).
According to accounts provided by local residents based on statements from the injured Mr Chakraborty, he and Mr Sheel were walking home from the local Kamalmunshir Hat at approximately 8:00 pm on Tuesday. Whilst traversing the rural road near the western bank of Joulur Dighi, they encountered three individuals standing in the dark. One of the figures was observed wearing a burqa.
When Mr Sheel and Mr Chakraborty activated a torchlight to discern the identities of the individuals, the group launched an immediate physical assault, stabbing both men. Responding to the victims’ cries for help, local residents rushed to the scene, causing the three assailants to flee into the surrounding area.
Medical Response and Police Investigation
The casualties were initially rescued by community members and transported to the Patiya Upazila Health Complex. Due to the critical nature of their injuries, medical staff transferred both men to Chattogram Medical College Hospital following preliminary treatment. Mr Sheel succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at CMCH later that evening.
Following the attack, local residents pursued the fleeing suspects and successfully detained one man on suspicion of involvement. The individual, identified as 35-year-old Abidul Islam, a resident of the Gaibandha district, was subjected to a public beating before being delivered into police custody.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Patiya Police Station, Ziaul Haque, confirmed the facts of the incident. He stated that a police detachment visited the crime scene on Tuesday night immediately after receiving notification. Law enforcement officials are currently investigating the level of involvement of the detained suspect, and police operations remain underway to apprehend the remaining individuals connected to the assault.
