Mob Violence Erupts in Pabna Village

A serious incident of public unrest has been reported in Ariadangi village under Atikula Thana in Pabna District, following allegations of sexual harassment that triggered widespread anger, clashes, and arson attacks on multiple properties.

According to local sources, tensions first began after an allegation of harassment surfaced in early June, centring on an individual from the area. The situation escalated significantly over the following days, culminating in a large-scale protest and subsequent violent outbreak on Sunday, 14 June. What initially began as a peaceful human chain soon deteriorated into chaos, resulting in damage to residential and commercial properties and prompting urgent intervention by law enforcement agencies.

On the morning of the incident, students, teachers, and local residents gathered near the Ariadangi market area after the reopening of a local educational institution. The demonstrators called for swift arrest and exemplary punishment of the accused, expressing strong condemnation of the alleged act. However, the protest quickly spiralled out of control.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that a section of the crowd turned violent, vandalising a grocery shop and a tea stall reportedly linked to the accused. Shortly afterwards, the situation intensified further as a residential property was attacked and set on fire. Furniture, household items, and other belongings were either completely or partially destroyed in the blaze. Reports also suggest that several neighbouring properties sustained minor damage during the unrest.

The rapid escalation created panic across the locality, forcing residents to flee to safer areas. Fire services and police units were later deployed to the scene, managing to bring the situation under control after significant effort. Additional police personnel were stationed in and around the area to prevent further disturbances.

Authorities confirmed that the incident is connected to a case initially reported on 1 June. A formal complaint was later filed on 12 June by the victim’s family under relevant laws concerning violence against women. Police stated that investigations are ongoing and that appropriate legal action will be taken based on evidence.

Local opinion remains divided, with some residents alleging that the accused had a history of antisocial behaviour. However, law enforcement officials have urged the public to refrain from taking matters into their own hands and to allow due legal process to proceed.
