At least 14 people have been killed after a helicopter operated by Saudi Arabia’s state-owned energy giant, Saudi Aramco, crashed in the country’s Eastern Province, according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
The fatal accident occurred on Sunday in the Ras Tanura area, a strategically important coastal city that is home to one of the world’s largest oil export terminals. Saudi authorities confirmed that all 14 people on board the aircraft lost their lives in the crash. No survivors were reported.
Officials have not yet disclosed the identities or nationalities of those killed, nor have they confirmed whether the passengers were company employees, contractors, or flight crew. The helicopter was reportedly operating in connection with Saudi Aramco’s activities, although further operational details have not been released.
Authorities have launched a formal investigation to determine the cause of the accident. Investigators are expected to examine a range of possible factors, including the aircraft’s technical condition, weather conditions at the time of the flight, maintenance records, and operational procedures. Until the investigation is completed, officials have refrained from speculating on what may have led to the crash.
Saudi authorities expressed their deepest condolences to the families of those who died and pledged to conduct a thorough inquiry into the incident. The government said every effort would be made to establish the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Ras Tanura is one of the Kingdom’s most significant energy hubs and plays a vital role in Saudi Arabia’s oil production and export infrastructure. Helicopters are frequently used in the region to transport personnel involved in energy operations, particularly between industrial facilities and offshore locations. Such flights are considered an essential part of the country’s extensive oil and gas network.
While aviation incidents involving Saudi Aramco are relatively uncommon, accidents of this nature typically prompt comprehensive safety reviews. The findings of the ongoing investigation are expected to help determine whether additional operational or technical measures are required to enhance flight safety and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The crash has cast a shadow over Saudi Arabia’s energy sector, with attention now focused on the official investigation that will establish the exact cause of one of the country’s deadliest recent helicopter accidents.
