Hardik Pandya is poised to make his much-awaited return to international cricket as India prepares to announce its squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against South Africa. The selection meeting, overseen by Ajit Agarkar, is scheduled to take place in Raipur on Wednesday, where India is currently engaged in the second ODI of the series.
Hardik, who has been recovering from a left quadricep injury sustained during the Asia Cup in September, demonstrated his readiness in emphatic fashion on Tuesday. Representing Baroda in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he delivered an impressive allround performance—claiming a wicket in his four-over spell and scoring an unbeaten 77 to guide his team to a crucial victory over Punjab. His successful return is expected to provide India with both balance and experience ahead of the demanding South Africa series.
However, Shubman Gill’s participation remains doubtful. The talented opener injured his neck during the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata. The injury, understood to be a pinched nerve, forced him to retire hurt and ruled him out of the second Test, which India lost to concede the series 2-0. He has also missed the ongoing ODI series.
Medical professionals have advised a minimum rest period of five weeks before he resumes training. Gill reported to the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru on Monday to continue his rehabilitation, but early indications suggest he is still a long way from full recovery. As a result, India may be required to identify an alternative opening partner for Abhishek Sharma.
Among the potential candidates are Sanju Samson and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Samson was part of the squad for the recent Australia T20Is, though he had limited opportunities. Jaiswal, despite not being selected for that tour, remains a strong contender due to his aggressive batting and recent form. The decision could significantly influence India’s approach in the upcoming series.
The selectors are also evaluating the inclusion of Riyan Parag, who last represented India in 2024 and has since led Assam with distinction in the domestic circuit.
The T20I series is scheduled to commence on December 9 in Cuttack, with subsequent fixtures to be held in New Chandigarh, Dharamsala, Lucknow, and Ahmedabad. India, led by Suryakumar Yadav, currently occupy the top position in the ICC T20I rankings, whereas South Africa are ranked fifth.
With the T20 World Cup drawing near, India will view the series as an essential opportunity to test combinations and assess player readiness. Hardik Pandya’s return comes as a significant boost, although the uncertainty surrounding Shubman Gill continues to pose a challenge for the team’s preparations.
