Hasnat Abdullah Trapped in Chattogram Political Clash

National Citizen Party (NCP) leader and Cumilla-4 Member of Parliament Hasnat Abdullah was briefly confined for around an hour following a heated protest by Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) activists at the residence of former Chattogram City Corporation mayor M Monjur Alam in Chattogram city.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday (14 April), quickly escalated into a tense political confrontation, requiring police intervention to ensure the MP’s safe departure from the premises.

Sudden arrival sparks rapid mobilisation

According to eyewitness accounts, Hasnat Abdullah arrived at the former mayor’s residence in the afternoon in a convoy of two vehicles. News of his visit spread rapidly through the surrounding area, prompting BNP activists to gather outside the property within minutes.

What began as a small gathering soon turned into a larger demonstration as party workers encircled the main gate of the residence, effectively restricting entry and exit. The growing crowd led to a standoff situation inside and outside the premises.

Protesters demand explanation

The BNP activists raised strong objections to the MP’s presence at the residence, questioning the political implications of the visit. Demonstrators demanded clarification over what they described as engagement with a figure associated at various times with rival political alignments.

Chants such as “Awami League collaborators must be warned” were heard outside the residence, alongside slogans criticising perceived political opportunism. Protesters also repeatedly questioned the purpose of the meeting and called for transparency regarding the discussions held inside.

Eyewitnesses reported a charged atmosphere, with verbal exchanges between those inside the residence and demonstrators outside, although no immediate reports of physical violence were confirmed.

Police intervention defuses situation

As tensions escalated, personnel from the Chattogram Metropolitan Police arrived at the scene and moved to stabilise the situation. Officers negotiated with both sides and established a controlled corridor to allow safe movement.

Following police mediation, Hasnat Abdullah spoke briefly with the protesters under supervision before leaving the residence approximately one hour after being effectively confined inside.

Authorities later confirmed that the situation had been brought under control without major injury or damage, and normal activity in the area resumed shortly afterwards.

Background of the residence owner

The residence belongs to M Monjur Alam, a former mayor of Chattogram City Corporation whose political career has spanned affiliations with both the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and, at different points, engagement with Awami League-linked programmes.

He was elected mayor in 2010 as a BNP-backed candidate and later served as an adviser to the BNP chairperson. His subsequent appearances at events associated with rival political circles have contributed to his reputation as a politically flexible figure within Chattogram’s local landscape.

Political sensitivities in Chattogram

The episode highlights the continuing volatility of political interactions in Bangladesh’s port city, where even private visits by national-level figures can trigger swift mobilisation by opposing party activists.

Political analysts note that such confrontations often reflect deeper mistrust between rival groups and the sensitivity surrounding perceived alliances or symbolic engagements.

While no official statement has been issued regarding any disciplinary or legal follow-up, police presence in the area was temporarily increased as a precautionary measure following the incident.

The situation underscores the fragile nature of political discourse at the local level, where historical rivalries and shifting allegiances continue to shape reactions on the ground.
