Housewife Killed in Brutal Shovel Attack

A 44-year-old housewife was brutally murdered after being repeatedly struck with a shovel in Barguna district, prompting a police investigation into what appears to be a targeted killing. The victim, identified as Alamtaz, was found dead at her home in the Agapadma Dil Mahmud area under Ward No. 5 of Noltona Union in Barguna Sadar upazila on Friday evening (6 March).

Alamtaz was the wife of local resident Abul Hawlader and the mother of three children. The shocking incident has sent waves of concern through the community, as residents struggle to understand the motive behind such a violent crime.

According to police and local sources, Alamtaz was alone in her house at the time of the attack. Taking advantage of her isolation, unknown assailants allegedly entered the residence and assaulted her with a heavy iron shovel. The blows were so severe that her face was badly disfigured and she sustained fatal head injuries.

Investigators reported finding significant bloodstains at the scene, indicating that the attack took place inside or near the house. Police later recovered the suspected murder weapon—a shovel believed to have been used in the assault. However, despite ongoing efforts, no suspects had been arrested at the time of reporting.

Interestingly, valuables inside the house—including gold jewellery and cash—were reportedly left untouched. This detail has led investigators to believe that robbery was unlikely to be the primary motive. Instead, police are examining the possibility of a personal dispute or premeditated attack.

Local resident Naeem Hossain Tanvir said he rushed to the house after hearing the news following the evening iftar. Upon arrival, he saw Alamtaz’s lifeless body. According to him, the family was not known to have any serious disputes within the neighbourhood. He also noted that the victim’s sons run businesses in Barguna town and that the family was financially stable. Nevertheless, he could not rule out the possibility of conflict with someone outside the immediate community.

Another neighbour, Champa Begum, recounted that residents initially rushed to the house after hearing reports of a fire. When they arrived, they discovered Alamtaz’s body lying on the veranda with visible signs of severe facial injuries.

Local government representative Shafiquzzaman Mahfuz, Chairman of Noltona Union Parishad, described the incident as a “heinous and brutal killing.” He urged law enforcement agencies to conduct a swift and thorough investigation to identify and prosecute those responsible.

Additional Superintendent of Police Mohammad Salahuddin of the Barguna Sadar Circle confirmed that officers quickly responded to the scene after receiving the report. A preliminary inquest was conducted before the body was sent to the Barguna General Hospital morgue for autopsy. Police also seized a blunt iron weapon believed to have been used in the attack.

Authorities stated that investigators are currently collecting evidence and questioning local residents to identify possible suspects and determine the motive behind the killing.
