Iran Seeks FIFA Guarantees Over World Cup Respect

The President of the Football Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran (FFIRI), Mehdi Taj, has announced a scheduled meeting with FIFA President Gianni Infantino to discuss the treatment of the Iranian national team and its officials during the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup. On Wednesday, Mr Taj confirmed that this high-level dialogue is expected to take place within the next three to four days.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to commence on 11 June, hosted jointly by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. However, diplomatic tensions have already begun to impact the sporting event. Last week, Canadian authorities denied Mr Taj entry into the country, citing his alleged previous affiliations with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the primary military branch of the Iranian government.

Threats of Withdrawal and Diplomatic Friction

On Tuesday, Mehdi Taj issued a formal warning, stating that Iran might withdraw from the tournament if FIFA cannot guarantee that Iranian state institutions will be treated with appropriate respect. While the Iranian squad is scheduled to reside in the United States throughout the group stages, the denial of entry for federation officials has raised concerns regarding the diplomatic environment the team will face.

Speaking to the Iranian state broadcaster, IRIB, Mr Taj articulated the federation’s stance:

“we will convey our expectations to FIFA. If they can meet those expectations, we will certainly participate. However, if there is no guarantee for our demands, no one has the right to insult us or our state pillars. If disrespectful behaviour continues and our players are subjected to such [political] questioning, we may take a different decision.”

Political Background and IRGC Designations

The friction stems from the fact that both the United States and Canada have officially designated the IRGC as a “terrorist organisation.” Consequently, both nations have implemented strict policies prohibiting individuals associated with the military branch from entering their territories. Before his career in football administration, Mehdi Taj served as a high-ranking official within the IRGC in Isfahan province.

The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has formally supported Mr Taj’s position. Spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei addressed journalists in Tehran, emphasising that the national team’s presence in North America is for a global sporting event rather than private travel. Mr Baghaei asserted:

“Our national football team is not merely ‘travelling’ to the United States; we are going there to participate in the FIFA World Cup. Therefore, it is FIFA’s responsibility to ensure all necessary facilities and the appropriate environment. Furthermore, the host countries have very clear obligations under FIFA rules. They must take necessary measures and issue visas to relevant individuals without prioritising political considerations or motives.”

Iran’s Group Stage Schedule

Iran has been drawn into Group G, with their fixtures scheduled across two major American cities. The federation’s participation remains contingent on the outcome of the forthcoming discussions with FIFA leadership.

Under FIFA’s “Hosting Agreement,” host nations are generally required to facilitate the entry of all qualified teams and their accredited delegates. The upcoming meeting between Taj and Infantino is expected to address whether these sporting regulations will supersede the current domestic security policies of the North American host nations.
