In a stern crackdown on illicit activities within academic residential facilities, the administration of Jahangirnagar University (JU) detained a female student on Saturday, 18 April 2026, after she was allegedly discovered consuming narcotics. The raid, conducted at Nawab Faizunnesa Hall, resulted in the seizure of a significant cache of contraband, including cannabis, alcohol, and various drug-related paraphernalia.
The detained individual has been identified as Inisha, a student from the 48th batch of the Department of Drama and Dramatics. Although she is officially a resident of Begum Khaleda Zia Hall, she was apprehended in Room 116 of the Nawab Faizunnesa Hall, which is allocated to Tanuja Tithi, a 51st-batch student of the Management Studies Department.
Details of the Administrative Raid
The operation was initiated following a report from Sumaiya Khanam, the General Secretary (GS) of the Nawab Faizunnesa Hall Council. Residents had raised concerns regarding an overpowering and suspicious odour emanating from Room 116. Acting swiftly on this intelligence, Hall Warden Sultana Akhtar led a disciplinary team to investigate the premises during the late afternoon.
Upon entering the room, the administration reportedly caught Inisha in the act of consuming drugs. A thorough search of the dormitory room led to the discovery of various illegal substances and smoking equipment.
| Category of Seized Item | Description of Contraband |
| Narcotics | Significant quantity of processed cannabis |
| Alcohol | Multiple bottles of both local and foreign liquor |
| Paraphernalia | Smoking pipes, rolling materials, and multiple lighters |
| Evidence | Large volume of cigarette remnants and suspicious liquids |
| Status | Confiscated by the University Proctorial Body |
Official Statements and Disciplinary Action
Sumaiya Khanam, the Hall Council GS, expressed her dismay over the incident, noting that this was not the first time Inisha had been under scrutiny. “We had previously received informal complaints regarding this student bringing unauthorised outsiders into the residential block and engaging in questionable conduct,” she stated. “Such illegal and immoral activities within an academic sanctuary are entirely unacceptable. We demand exemplary punishment to deter such behaviour in the future.”
The Provost of Nawab Faizunnesa Hall, Professor Golam Mostafa, confirmed the details of the raid, emphasising the gravity of the breach of university regulations.
“Once the scent of the substances was confirmed by our student representatives, we moved in immediately. The student was found in a compromised state, and the room was littered with prohibited items. As she is not a resident of this particular hall, we coordinated with the relevant authorities to ensure she was transferred to the custody of her own hall administration.”
Formation of an Enquiry Committee
To ensure a transparent and comprehensive investigation, the university has established a five-member enquiry committee. This body is tasked with reviewing the evidence and submitting a formal report to the Vice-Chancellor’s office for further action.
Convener: Professor Dr Sultana
Member Secretary: Deputy Registrar Yar Hossain
Members: Rasheda Khatun, Nadia Sultana, and Shahanaz Akhtar.
Professor Manjur Elahi, the Provost of Begum Khaleda Zia Hall, noted that while Inisha has not been a regular resident of late, the hall administration will take stringent action based on the committee’s findings. Meanwhile, University Proctor Professor Dr A.K.M. Rashidul Alam reassured the public that the administration would adhere strictly to university statutes when determining the final disciplinary measures.
The accused student reportedly fled the scene shortly after the administrative handover. Efforts to contact her via her registered mobile number have thus far proven unsuccessful. The incident has ignited a wider debate amongst the student body regarding security protocols and the prevalence of substance abuse within the university’s residential halls.
