JAKSU Election Finalised After Eight Candidates Withdraw Nominations

Jagannath University’s Central Students’ Union (JAKSU) and Hall Students’ Union elections have seen eight candidates withdraw their nominations, while nine previously disqualified candidates for the central council have had their candidacies reinstated.

The announcement was made on Wednesday through a notification signed by Professor Mostafa Hasan, Chief Election Commissioner of JAKSU. The notification detailed the names of the candidates who voluntarily withdrew from the race.

Among those who withdrew were:

  • Vice President aspirants: Tausin Islam and Mithun Chandra Roy

  • General Secretary aspirant: Mehedi Hasan Shuvo

  • Education and Research Secretary aspirants: Md. Riyad Sarkar and Ujjal Chandra Roy

  • Library and Seminar Secretary aspirant: Asif Hossain

  • Executive Member aspirants: Md. Ashraful Islam and Abubakar Sompad

Professor Hasan noted, “After careful review, we have finalised a list of 189 candidates for both the central and hall councils. Of the initially disqualified candidates, two tested positive in doping tests while others did not participate or had pending complaints. Over the past two days, eight candidates have chosen to withdraw.”

Following scrutiny and doping tests, the initial list of 231 candidates for 21 central council positions was reduced by 47 candidates. After appeals, nine candidates regained eligibility, and with the eight recent withdrawals, the final central council list now includes 157 candidates. The hall council, consisting of 13 positions, features 33 candidates, bringing the total number of contenders across all elections to 190.

Originally, 249 nomination papers were submitted for 34 positions on 17–18 November, and after verification, 231 names were published on 24 November. Subsequent modifications to the election schedule were made following a Syndicate meeting on 4 December, and doping tests were conducted on 9–10 December. The final list was officially released on 11 December.

According to the election timetable, campaigning will run from 15 December midnight until 27 December midnight, with voting and counting scheduled for 30 December, after which the results will be officially declared.
