A local leader of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami was killed in a tragic road accident after becoming trapped between a truck and a microbus on the Dhaka–Chattogram Highway in Sitakunda, Chattogram, on Friday morning.
The fatal crash occurred at around 10:30 am near the Madambibirhat pedestrian overbridge, an area that experiences heavy traffic throughout the day. The victim, 42-year-old Md Mohiuddin, was riding a motorcycle towards Dhaka when the accident took place.
According to highway police, Mohiuddin was attempting to overtake a truck while travelling along the highway. At the same moment, a speeding microbus approached from behind and also tried to overtake his motorcycle. With little room to manoeuvre, the motorcyclist became trapped between the truck and the microbus, resulting in a devastating impact.
The force of the collision caused catastrophic injuries, including the severing of Mohiuddin’s right arm. Witnesses and local residents rushed to the scene immediately after the accident and rescued him in critical condition. He was taken without delay to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where the attending doctors declared him dead shortly after his arrival.
Mohiuddin was a resident of the Bhatiari Rail Station Road area in Sitakunda Upazila. Within Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, he served as the secretary of Ward No. 5 under the Bhatiari Union unit. His death has shocked local residents and members of the political organisation, who described the incident as a tragic loss.
Road accidents involving motorcycles remain a persistent concern on the busy Dhaka–Chattogram Highway, one of Bangladesh’s busiest transport corridors. The route accommodates thousands of passenger and freight vehicles every day, increasing the risk of serious collisions, particularly during overtaking manoeuvres or when drivers fail to maintain safe distances and appropriate speeds.
Police have documented the circumstances surrounding the crash and are continuing the necessary legal procedures. The accident once again highlights the importance of cautious driving, adherence to traffic regulations and responsible overtaking practices on heavily congested highways, where a moment’s misjudgement can have fatal consequences.
