Bangladesh singer Rumaana Morshed Konokchapa had collected nomination forms from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) for a reserved women’s seat in the National Parliament, but she was not included in the final list of nominees.
Following the announcement, she responded on social media platform Facebook, briefly writing “Alhamdulillah”. Later, she published a further post explaining her position and the context of her earlier reaction.
In her detailed statement, Konokchapa said that she always uses “Alhamdulillah” in any circumstance of life, considering all outcomes to be part of divine will. She stated that she had made efforts to participate in the national election directly but did not receive nomination at that stage either. She further explained that, following strong encouragement and demand from villagers, she again participated in the process for reserved seats. However, she noted that she was not given consideration in that round either. Despite this, she again expressed gratitude by saying “Alhamdulillah” and added that there may be goodness in the outcome. She also stated that life does not end here.
In another post, she addressed her supporters and well-wishers, expressing hope that they would continue to stand by her. Describing herself as an ordinary person, she commented that the party may have considered her a “simple person”. However, she stated that she believes she still has contributions to make to the country beyond her music career. She affirmed her continued intention to work for the nation and its people. She also added that even if she is unable to achieve further goals, she may still contribute in a symbolic sense by returning to the soil and enriching it. She requested prayers from the public.
Meanwhile, the BNP has announced a list of 36 candidates for reserved women’s seats in the National Parliament. The list includes several senior party figures, including Selima Rahman, Nipun Roy Chowdhury, and Sanzida Islam Tuli. However, Konokchapa’s name, along with any representatives from the entertainment sector, was not included in the final selection.
In Bangladesh, reserved seats for women in Parliament are allocated to political parties in proportion to their representation in the House. Parties then nominate candidates for these seats, who are subsequently elected through parliamentary procedures.
