Low Pressure Triggers Heavy Rain Alert

A low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is expected to increase rainfall activity across Bangladesh, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department. In a weather bulletin issued at 11:00 am on Monday (11 May), the department warned of the development of dense thundercloud systems over the country, which may lead to widespread and intensified rainfall in the coming days.

Meteorologists have reported that a low-pressure system has formed over the south-western Bay of Bengal, near the north coast of Sri Lanka and adjoining areas. In addition, an extension of a western trough is currently positioned over West Bengal and neighbouring regions. These combined atmospheric conditions are contributing to increased rainfall potential across Bangladesh, particularly in the northern and north-eastern divisions.

According to the forecast, from Wednesday evening (13 May) to Saturday (16 May), heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in the Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions. Heavy rainfall is defined as 44–88 millimetres, while very heavy rainfall is classified as above 89 millimetres within a 24-hour period. The authorities have also indicated a risk of temporary waterlogging in low-lying areas of Sylhet due to sustained heavy precipitation.

Meteorologist Dr Omar Faruk noted that the system is currently under observation, and it will take approximately 24 hours to determine whether the low-pressure area will intensify further and move towards the coast.

Following several days of humid and uncomfortable heat conditions, rainfall began in parts of the country on Sunday. Rainfall intensity is expected to increase in the Rangpur division from Tuesday. Meanwhile, intermittent light to moderate rain is likely across much of the country, including Dhaka and Mymensingh, throughout the week.
