Major Fire Ravages Khulna Shopping Centre

A devastating fire erupted late on Monday night at the Baytul Noor Shopping Centre, located adjacent to New Market in Khulna, causing extensive property damage. According to local sources, the blaze originated around 11:00 p.m. in the ‘Godhuli’ mobile shop and rapidly spread to neighbouring stores.

Eyewitnesses and shop owners reported that smoke was first noticed at approximately 11:00 p.m. After alerting security personnel and entering the premises, they found the flames already intense. Initial attempts to control the fire with four fire extinguishers were unsuccessful. Investigations suggest that the complex electrical wiring and the explosion of air conditioning units contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.

Abdul Malek, Deputy Director of Khulna Fire Service and Civil Defence, stated that six fire service units arrived promptly at the scene, and the fire was brought under control by 1:15 a.m. Preliminary findings indicate that an electrical short circuit may have been the primary cause. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.

Shop owners highlighted significant structural and safety concerns. They indicated that the tangled, exposed electrical wires and flammable materials associated with air conditioning units accelerated the fire’s progression.

The preliminary assessment of damages is summarised below:

Shop NameDamage TypeEstimated LossRemarks
Godhuli MobileComplete destructionSevereFire origin
Next Generation GadgetPartial damageModerateFire extinguisher used

Other 7–9 shopsPartial damageMinor to moderateDirect fire exposure

Fire service officials emphasised that the haphazard electrical layout and combustible materials were major factors in the rapid escalation of the blaze. Authorities have announced that a detailed report outlining the full extent of the damages will be released following a comprehensive investigation.

Local administration has instructed the shopping centre management to review and strengthen their safety protocols. The incident has caused widespread concern among Khulna’s business community, with many calling for improved fire prevention measures, better structural safety, and sufficient fire extinguishers to prevent future tragedies.

This incident serves as a stark warning to both business owners and the general public in Khulna that even large, modern shopping complexes are highly vulnerable without proper infrastructure and rigorous safety management.
