Man Arrested in Gopalganj with One-Shot Gun

In a significant development aimed at curbing the spread of illegal firearms, the Detective Branch (DB) of Gopalganj police has arrested a man in possession of a locally manufactured one-shot gun. The arrest was made during a targeted late-night operation, reflecting intensified efforts by law enforcement agencies to maintain public safety and prevent criminal activities involving unauthorised weapons.

The accused has been identified as Sharif Touhidul Haque, 48, a resident of Sharifpara in the Mary Gopinathpur area under Gopalganj Sadar upazila. According to police sources, the arrest took place at around 9:00 pm on Tuesday (30 December) following the receipt of confidential intelligence indicating that the suspect was in possession of an illegal firearm.

Confirming the details, Sub-Inspector Md Faruk Alam of the District Detective Police stated that law enforcement officers had been monitoring the suspect based on secret information. Acting on this tip-off, a DB team conducted a swift operation in Sharifpara, leading to the recovery of a locally made iron one-shot gun from the suspect’s possession.

Police officials noted that the recovered firearm is particularly dangerous despite its simple construction. The gun’s butt and barrel together measure approximately nine inches in length, making it compact and easily concealable. Preliminary assessments suggest that the illegal weapon has an estimated market value of around Tk 50,000, highlighting the lucrative underground trade in unauthorised firearms in the region.

Following his arrest, Sharif Touhidul Haque was taken into custody for initial interrogation. Law enforcement authorities are now investigating how he acquired the weapon, whether it was intended for personal use or linked to broader criminal activities, and whether any organised group is involved in the supply of such firearms. Officials have not ruled out the possibility of further arrests as the investigation continues.

A formal case has been filed against the accused under relevant sections of the Arms Act at Gopalganj Sadar Police Station. On Wednesday afternoon, he was produced before the court, which subsequently ordered that he be sent to jail pending further legal proceedings.

Senior police officials have reiterated their commitment to eliminating illegal arms from the district. They emphasised that intelligence-led operations will continue across Gopalganj to identify and apprehend individuals involved in the possession, manufacture or distribution of unauthorised weapons. Local residents have welcomed the arrest, expressing hope that such actions will contribute to a safer and more secure community.

The incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in tackling illegal arms and underscores the importance of public cooperation in reporting suspicious activities.
