Background of the dispute
According to police and local sources, the conflict originated when a road was being constructed through land belonging to Abdul Baten, the elder brother of the victim. The construction was reportedly carried out by Nasir Member, general secretary of the Chandonpur Union unit of the Awami League’s youth wing.
Abdul Baten, the landowner, did not object to the road itself but insisted that it should be constructed along one side of his land rather than through the middle. This disagreement escalated tensions between the parties. Local residents later intervened and attempted to mediate the dispute, and the issue was reportedly settled at the community level. However, according to local accounts, Nasir Member remained dissatisfied with the resolution.
Incident details
On the night of the incident, Delwar Hossain was travelling from his old house to his new residence. While passing along the road near his home, he was allegedly ambushed by Nasir Member and his associates, who had been waiting in the area. He was attacked with sharp weapons and sustained severe injuries.
Hearing his screams, local residents rushed to the scene and found him critically injured. He was first taken to Meghna Upazila Health Complex, where doctors referred him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital due to the seriousness of his condition. He later died after being admitted there, according to hospital officials.
Statements from officials and locals
Chandonpur Union Jubo Dal President Sirajul Islam Babu stated that Abdul Baten had objected only to the alignment of the road through the middle of his land and had requested it be built along one side. He further stated that although the matter had been initially settled through mediation, tensions persisted and eventually led to the fatal attack on Delwar Hossain.
Meghna Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mousumi Akhtar confirmed that a written complaint had been submitted by Abdul Baten. Following the complaint, the Project Implementation Officer (PIO) was sent to the site, who reportedly found that the road construction was not taking place over the complainant’s land.
Meghna Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Aminul Islam stated that police reached the scene after receiving news of the incident. He added that the law and order situation in the area remains under control. However, the body of the deceased had not yet been returned from Dhaka at the time of reporting.
