Manchester United Part Ways with Rúben Amorim

Manchester United have brought an abrupt end to their association with Rúben Amorim. The Portuguese coach’s chapter at Old Trafford lasted a mere 14 months, as the club decided to relieve him of his duties. For Wednesday’s Premier League clash against Burnley, the dugout will see the club’s own academy graduate, Darren Fletcher, take temporary charge.

The signs of Amorim’s impending departure were evident last Friday. It had become increasingly clear that his working relationship with senior club officials was strained. Sources suggest that Amorim was frustrated by the lack of full support in the transfer market, which left him feeling constrained in his ambitions for the squad.

The situation reached a tipping point following Sunday’s 1–1 draw against Leeds United. Speaking candidly to the press, Amorim revealed that he wished to operate not merely as a coach but as a full manager with complete authority over the footballing side of the club. He also hinted that he might consider leaving upon the conclusion of his 18-month contract.

United, however, were unwilling to wait for that period to expire. Within 24 hours, the club announced that Amorim’s tenure was over. Currently sixth in the league, United are keen to steer the team forward and finish the season in a respectable position. A club statement read:

“This has been a difficult decision, made to ensure Manchester United can complete the season in a competitive and respected position in the Premier League. Under Amorim’s management, the club has seen limited visible progress on the pitch.”

Amorim’s record at United highlights the challenges he faced. Since taking charge in November 2024, his side has won only 25 of 63 matches. In fact, he now holds the record, after David Moyes in 2014, for the shortest tenure of a permanent manager in the club’s recent history.

In the meantime, Darren Fletcher has been appointed caretaker manager. The 41-year-old former Scottish midfielder, now head coach of United’s under-18 side, boasts a glittering playing career that includes five Premier League titles and a Champions League triumph. However, this will be his first opportunity to manage the senior squad.

Fletcher’s temporary stewardship marks the start of a new chapter for Manchester United, with fans and the club alike hoping that the former player can inspire a resurgence and steer the team through the remainder of the campaign with renewed vigour.
