A three-and-a-half-month-old infant suffering from symptoms consistent with measles has died while undergoing treatment at the Measles Isolation Ward of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, according to hospital authorities. The deceased child, named Arisha, was the daughter of Arafat Hossain and Ruma Akter from Harirampur village in Trishal upazila of Mymensingh district.
Hospital records indicate that Arisha was admitted on 21 April after presenting with measles-like symptoms. Despite receiving treatment, she died at approximately 2:15 pm on Saturday while under medical care. Doctors also noted that the infant had been suffering from pneumonia alongside the suspected measles infection, which likely complicated her condition.
In the last 24 hours alone, 28 additional children showing measles-like symptoms have been admitted to the hospital’s isolation ward. The facility continues to experience a steady influx of paediatric cases, placing pressure on its treatment capacity.
According to hospital data, since 17 March up to Sunday morning, a total of 856 children with suspected measles symptoms have been admitted. Of these, 755 have been discharged after recovery, while 17 children have died. At present, 84 children remain under treatment in the isolation ward. Over the same 24-hour period, 33 children have been released after showing signs of recovery.
A senior hospital official, Assistant Director (Administration) Mohammad Mainuddin Khan, confirmed the latest developments, stating that the facility continues to receive new cases daily. He added that in the past 24 hours, one additional child, aged three and a half months, had died while receiving treatment. He also reiterated that pneumonia was a complicating factor in the child’s condition.

Medical authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as new admissions persist. Health officials have emphasised the importance of early diagnosis and prompt treatment, particularly for infants and young children who are more vulnerable to complications such as pneumonia when infected with measles-like illnesses.
