Measles Death Toll Passes 600

The number of child deaths linked to measles in the country has risen further, with seven additional children reported dead from measles-related symptoms during the past 24 hours. The information was released on Wednesday in the Directorate General of Health Services’ regular measles situation report.

According to the report, the deaths occurred between 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday and 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday. With these latest fatalities, a total of 511 children have died with symptoms consistent with measles since 15 March. In addition, the health authorities have confirmed 90 child deaths directly attributable to measles through official verification. Combined, the overall death toll has reached 601.

The latest figures indicate that the outbreak continues to affect a significant number of children across the country. The Directorate General of Health Services reported that 1,210 additional people developed measles-related symptoms during the most recent 24-hour reporting period. Since 15 March, the cumulative number of people exhibiting measles symptoms has risen to 74,572.

The report also stated that 55 new measles cases were confirmed during the same 24-hour period. As a result, the total number of confirmed measles infections recorded nationwide since 15 March now stands at 9,191.

Hospital admissions linked to the outbreak remain substantial. Since 15 March, a total of 60,158 patients with measles-related symptoms have been admitted to hospitals across the country. Of these, 55,942 patients have recovered and subsequently been discharged from medical facilities.

The Directorate General of Health Services further noted that, among the seven children who died during the latest reporting period, six were from Dhaka Division and one was from Mymensingh Division.
