A criminal case has been filed in Debiganj upazila of Panchagarh alleging the gang rape of an 18-year-old woman and an attempted rape of her female relative. The case was lodged on Tuesday night by the victim’s father. Three young men have been named as accused, while three other unidentified individuals have also been included in the case.
According to police, both women are currently receiving treatment at Panchagarh Modern Sadar Hospital. Medical examinations are being conducted, and arrangements are underway to record their statements before a court.
Information obtained from police and the case statement indicates that the 18-year-old woman lives with her parents. The family has a house in a remote part of the village and also resides in a dwelling allocated to them under a nearby housing project. The victim’s maternal aunt had recently come to visit the family.
On Sunday afternoon, the young woman and her aunt attended a cultural programme in a neighbouring area. They returned to the family’s village home at approximately 10:00 pm. Before their return, the victim’s parents had locked the outer tin gate of the house and gone to their residence in the nearby housing project.
While standing in front of the locked house, the two women reportedly encountered an unfamiliar man. They asked him for assistance in arranging a van to take them to the housing project. The man then left the area. A short time later, he returned in a battery-powered vehicle accompanied by five other individuals.
The case alleges that three of the men removed part of the house fencing and took the young woman inside the premises. There, she was allegedly threatened and raped by the three men. At the same time, the remaining three men allegedly forced her aunt onto the battery-powered vehicle and took her to the bank of the nearby Karatoa River. According to the complaint, they attempted to rape her there. During a struggle, she managed to escape.
At around 1:15 am, the aunt returned to her niece’s house. The complaint states that three individuals fled the area upon seeing her. Early on Monday morning, the two women went to the family’s residence in the housing project and informed relatives about the incident.
They were initially taken to Debiganj Upazila Health Complex for treatment. Later on Monday night, both women were transferred to Panchagarh Modern Sadar Hospital for further medical care and examinations.

Debiganj Police Station Investigation Officer Prabir Kumar Sarkar said that both victims remain under medical care at Panchagarh Modern Sadar Hospital. He confirmed that medical examinations are in progress and that steps are being taken to present the women before a court for the recording of their statements. He also stated that efforts to locate and arrest the accused are continuing.
