Security measures have been reinforced at eight airports across Bangladesh, including Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital, following concerns over a potential militant threat targeting key installations in the country.
The development was confirmed on Monday by Air Vice Marshal Mostafa Mahmood Sidiq, Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB), during a briefing with journalists. He stated that the decision followed an official communication issued by Police Headquarters, prompting enhanced vigilance at all operational airports.
According to him, airport security in Bangladesh is already maintained under a strict framework as these facilities are designated as Key Point Installations (KPI), requiring continuous high-level protection. However, following the receipt of the recent letter from Police Headquarters, additional security measures have been implemented as a precautionary response. He further clarified that these steps are part of routine security strengthening procedures rather than an extraordinary measure.
Bangladesh currently operates eight airports in total. These include three international airports and five domestic airports. The international airports are located in Dhaka, Chattogram, and Sylhet, while the remaining five serve domestic routes across different regions of the country.
Security responsibilities at these airports are shared among multiple agencies. The CAAB’s own aviation security unit (AVSEC) plays a central role, supported by the Armed Police Battalion (APBn), as well as other law enforcement and intelligence agencies. These organisations coordinate to ensure security screening, surveillance, access control, and operational safety within airport premises.
Following the recent alert, authorities have intensified monitoring at entry and exit points, passenger terminals, and other sensitive areas within airport boundaries. Passenger screening procedures and baggage checks have also been placed under heightened vigilance, in line with established security protocols.
The Police Headquarters, in its earlier communication issued last Thursday, warned that members of a banned extremist organisation could potentially attempt attacks on important state infrastructure, including the National Parliament Building and other strategic sites. In response, relevant authorities reviewed security arrangements and strengthened protective measures at critical locations, including airports.
The distribution of Bangladesh’s operational airports is outlined below:
| Category | Number of Airports | Locations |
|---|---|---|
| International Airports | 3 | Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet |
| Domestic Airports | 5 | Not specified in the official statement |
Authorities have reiterated that airport operations remain normal and that all flights are being conducted under enhanced but routine security oversight. Coordination among security agencies continues as part of ongoing risk management and preventive safety protocols at all aviation facilities.
