On World Mother’s Day, a deeply moving example of maternal devotion and sacrifice emerged from the Jajira Municipality in Shariatpur, where a mother donated one of her kidneys to save the life of her critically ill son.
The patient, 28-year-old Nasim Jahan Akash from the North Baiksha area, had been suffering from severe kidney complications for an extended period. According to family sources, both of his kidneys failed approximately nine months ago, leaving him dependent on ongoing medical care and creating significant emotional and financial strain on the household.
After a series of medical evaluations and consultations, his mother, Nasima Sultana, made the extraordinary decision to become his kidney donor. She serves professionally as the head teacher of a government primary school. Her decision was made following confirmation of medical compatibility and in consultation with specialist doctors involved in the case.
The kidney transplant operation was scheduled to take place in Dhaka on Sunday, 10 May, coinciding symbolically with World Mother’s Day. The procedure was to be carried out by Professor Dr Md Kamrul Islam, a renowned kidney transplant surgeon and urologist. He is the founder and Managing Director of a specialised kidney and urology hospital in the Shyamoli area of Dhaka, widely recognised for performing kidney transplants at reduced cost and, in many cases, without professional fees. His contributions to the medical field were formally recognised with the Independence Award in 2022.
Local residents described the event as a rare and powerful expression of unconditional parental love. Community member Imran Hossain remarked that the incident would be remembered as a significant humanitarian moment in the locality, highlighting how a mother not only gives life but, when necessary, also offers part of her own body to preserve it. He expressed hope for the patient’s swift recovery and prayed for the well-being of both mother and son.
The patient’s elder sister, Brishti, also shared her emotions, stating that the most meaningful gift of Mother’s Day was being given by their mother herself. She appealed to the public to pray for the successful completion of the surgery and the recovery of her brother.
