A series of separate violent incidents across several districts of Bangladesh left multiple people dead between Friday night and Saturday, with two of the most prominent cases reported in Feni. In one incident, the body of a local Awami League youth leader was recovered from a pond in Chhagalnaiya, while in another, the wife of an expatriate was found murdered inside her home after assailants allegedly entered by cutting through the tin roof. Fatal attacks were also reported in Cumilla, Lalmonirhat, Cox’s Bazar, Faridpur and Pabna, prompting separate police investigations.

The body of 35-year-old Zobayer Hossain Parvez, a leader of the Ghopal Union unit of the Jubo League, was recovered from a pond near his home in Chhagalnaiya Upazila of Feni on Saturday morning.
Parvez, the son of Abu Taher from the Nijkunjara Samity Bazar area, was an active figure in local Jubo League politics. According to Upazila Jubo League General Secretary Kazi Omar Faruk, he had expressed interest in becoming the next general secretary of the union unit.
Local residents said Parvez had long been associated with businesses involving dredger boats used for sand extraction from the Feni River. They also alleged that he had previously faced accusations of involvement in highway robberies targeting cargo vehicles on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway, along with other criminal activities in the Nijkunjara BSCIC industrial area. Following the political upheaval of 5 August 2024, several cattle were reportedly looted from his farm and his house was set on fire.
Family members said Parvez and another local resident, Mamunur Rashid Mamun, had spent a lengthy period in prison in connection with numerous cases filed after the political unrest. They claimed that after securing bail, a dispute over ownership of a shop triggered growing tensions between Parvez, Mamun and another individual, Shahadat Hossain.
Witnesses said an argument broke out between Parvez and Mamun outside Parvez’s house at around 9:00 pm on Friday. During the altercation, Parvez allegedly struck Mamun on the head with a torchlight. Although local residents believed the disagreement had been resolved later that evening, relatives alleged that Mamun and Shahadat subsequently called Parvez out of his home. He never returned.
At daybreak on Saturday, locals spotted a body floating in a nearby pond. Family members later identified it as Parvez. His brother, Nayan, said the victim had severe injuries to both hands, both legs and his throat, indicating a brutal assault before his death.
Chhagalnaiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abu Taher said both the victim and the two principal suspects had several criminal cases against them. Police believe hostility between the parties intensified after their release from prison. Detectives have already detained Shahadat while he was receiving treatment at a hospital in Chattogram. Parvez’s father has filed a murder case naming Shahadat, Mamun and five to six unidentified suspects.
In a separate incident in Feni’s Fulgazi Upazila, police recovered the body of 30-year-old Kajol Akter from her home in South Talbaria village under Amjadhat Union.
Kajol’s husband, Nurul Amin, works in Kuwait. The couple have three children.
Police said her hands, feet and mouth were tied when the body was recovered, and visible head injuries were found. Neighbours believe the attackers entered the house during the final hours of Friday night by cutting through the tin roof before restraining and killing her. Investigators are working to determine the motive behind the attack.
Another fatal incident occurred in Lalmai Upazila of Cumilla, where 38-year-old Enayet Hossain, also known as Bahar, was hacked to death on Saturday morning.
Police said a 35-year-old woman, whose husband is employed overseas, called the national emergency service shortly after the incident and claimed she had killed Bahar while defending herself against an attempted rape.
The victim’s mother, Nehara Begum, rejected that account. She said her son was physically disabled and alleged that he had been lured into the woman’s house before being attacked. According to her, the killing may have been linked to a long-running dispute between neighbouring families over a boundary wall.
Lalmai Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Nuruzzaman said investigators were examining both versions of events before reaching any conclusion.
In Lalmonirhat’s Hatibandha Upazila, 35-year-old Abdul Jalil was killed on Saturday afternoon after allegedly being struck with a stick by his uncle during a dispute over family land in the Dhowlai Paglar Bazar area.
In Pekua Upazila of Cox’s Bazar, 65-year-old Abu Taher was fatally attacked with a sharp weapon on Friday night in Harun Matbar Para under Magnama Union, according to local police.
Another fatal attack took place in Alfadanga Upazila of Faridpur, where 30-year-old Suman Sheikh was hacked to death on Friday evening. Police said the killing was linked to previous enmity and an ongoing village dispute.
In Pabna, Manju Sheikh, 35, identified as a local BNP activist, was shot dead during a violent clash over sand extraction from the Padma River.
The incident occurred on Friday afternoon in the river char area near Jotkakuria Kolabagan, on the boundary between Bharara and Chartarapur unions in Sadar Upazila. Police said the confrontation stemmed from a dispute between rival groups over control of sand extraction operations.
Separate investigations have been launched into each of the incidents. Police say efforts are under way to identify all those involved and establish the precise circumstances behind the killings.
