Police Officers Injured in Attack by Wanted Suspect

Two police officers were injured after coming under attack from a wanted suspect while attempting to execute an arrest warrant in Hatibandha Upazila of Lalmonirhat district. The suspect reportedly assaulted the officers with a locally made sharp weapon before fleeing the scene, prompting authorities to launch legal proceedings and continue efforts to apprehend him.

The incident took place at around midnight on Friday (26 June) in Gendukuri village under Tongbhanga Union. The injured officers have been identified as Sub-Inspector (SI) Ruhul Amin and Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Abdul Matin, both attached to Hatibandha Police Station.

According to police sources, SI Ruhul Amin and ASI Abdul Matin travelled to the suspect’s residence to arrest Rashidul Islam, who was wanted under an active arrest warrant and is also accused in multiple criminal cases. After reaching the house, the officers managed to detain him. However, Rashidul allegedly requested permission to change from a lungi into a pair of trousers before being taken into custody.

Police said the suspect used that opportunity to enter the house, where he reportedly armed himself with a locally made sharp weapon. Moments later, he launched a sudden attack on the two officers, inflicting injuries before escaping from the property.

Following the assault, the injured officers were rescued and taken to the emergency department of Hatibandha Upazila Health Complex, where they received initial treatment. Considering the seriousness of their injuries, attending physicians referred them to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for specialised medical care.

Dr Anarul Islam, Residential Medical Officer at Hatibandha Upazila Health Complex, said SI Ruhul Amin had sustained the more severe injuries. He confirmed that the officer was transferred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment, while appropriate medical care was also provided to the second injured officer.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ramzan Ali of Hatibandha Police Station said the officers had been carrying out a lawful operation to execute an arrest warrant when they were attacked. He added that police were closely monitoring the condition of the injured personnel and that legal action would be taken against the suspect.

Attacks on law enforcement officers during arrest operations pose significant challenges to policing and the enforcement of court-issued warrants. Such incidents also increase operational risks for officers performing their official duties. Police have indicated that efforts are continuing to locate and arrest the fleeing suspect so that he can be brought before the court in accordance with the law.
