As Bangladesh prepares for a monumental polling day, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has raised an urgent alarm regarding the potential misuse of religious attire to facilitate electoral fraud. Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday afternoon, Mahdi Amin, the spokesperson for the BNP’s Election Management Committee and Advisor to the party Chairman, revealed that the party has received intelligence concerning the mass production of burqas and niqabs across various regions for “nefarious purposes.”
Safeguarding Religious Values and the Vote
Mr Amin emphasised that while the BNP remains steadfast in its respect for Islamic values and the cultural significance of the burqa and niqab, there is a growing concern that these garments could be exploited as a disguise for proxy voting. He noted that the party holds the highest regard for women’s privacy and religious observances; however, he insisted that “no religious symbol should be weaponised to undermine the democratic process.”
The spokesperson called upon all pro-democracy forces and election officials to remain vigilant against individuals attempting to cast fraudulent ballots under false identities. He argued that the recent seizure of substantial funds from a Jamaat-e-Islami leader at Saidpur Airport should not be viewed as an isolated incident, but rather as part of a broader pattern of attempted election engineering.
Proposed Identity Verification Protocols
To balance religious sensitivity with electoral security, the BNP has proposed a specific set of protocols for the verification of veiled voters at polling stations:
| Step | Action | Responsibility |
| Verification | Cross-referencing voter identity with the National ID (NID) database. | Polling Officers |
| Visual Check | Temporary unveiling of the face, mirroring NID/Hajj photo standards. | Female Officials Only |
| Privacy | Conducted in a designated screened area to ensure modesty. | Female Assistant Presiding Officers |
| Witnessing | Verification must be witnessed by female polling agents. | Appointed Female Agents |
A Call for Peaceful Participation
Mr Amin reiterated the commitment of BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman to establishing women’s rights and ensuring a dignified environment for all citizens. He urged the public to disregard provocations and focus on the “spontaneous festival of democracy” that the nation has long awaited.
“We invite every citizen to reach their respective polling centres as early as possible tomorrow morning,” Mr Amin stated. “Let this election be a victory for the people of Bangladesh. We welcome everyone to join the march towards an unforgettable triumph for the BNP—the proven force for the protection of democracy.”
The party leadership further appealed to all political entities to maintain a climate of mutual coexistence and cordiality. By preventing rigging and forgery, Mr Amin concluded, the nation can finally realise the “mass aspiration” for a transparent and credible outcome.
