Runa Laila Melbourne Concert

Renowned South Asian music icon Runa Laila is set to perform in Melbourne this August as part of a special celebratory programme titled the “Runa Laila Legacy Tour”. The concert has been conceived as a tribute to her extraordinary and enduring musical career, spanning several decades and transcending national and cultural boundaries. The event is expected to draw significant interest from the Bangladeshi diaspora in Australia, alongside a wider international audience of music enthusiasts.

The concert will take place on 8 August at the prestigious Melbourne Recital Centre, one of the city’s leading venues for live classical and contemporary performances. The programme is scheduled to begin at 5:30 pm local time. It is being organised by Australia Bangladesh Cultural Exchange, an organisation known for promoting cultural dialogue and artistic collaboration between Bangladesh and Australia.

A key highlight of the evening will be the participation of the acclaimed ensemble Bengal Symphony, which will share the stage with Runa Laila. The group is led by National Film Award-winning music director and vocalist Imon Chowdhury, whose recent creative direction has helped the ensemble gain considerable recognition for blending traditional South Asian musical forms with contemporary arrangements.

According to organisers, the concert will feature a carefully curated repertoire of Runa Laila’s most celebrated and timeless songs, many of which have played a defining role in shaping the musical landscape of the region. In addition, Bengal Symphony is expected to present a selection of modern compositions that have gained popularity through platforms such as “Coke Studio Bangla”, offering audiences a fusion of classical influence and contemporary sound.

Preparations for the international tour are already underway. Bengal Symphony’s manager, Sujon Debnath, stated that preliminary discussions with organisers have been completed, while several logistical matters are still being finalised. Subject to the completion of arrangements, the ensemble is expected to depart from Dhaka on 30 July for Melbourne.

Interest among expatriate Bangladeshi communities has been notably strong, with early ticket sales indicating a positive response. Members of the participating musical team have also expressed enthusiasm on social media, highlighting the significance of performing alongside one of the subcontinent’s most respected vocalists.

The concert is widely viewed not merely as an entertainment event, but as a cultural milestone that showcases the richness of Bangladeshi musical heritage on an international platform.
