Rupganj Police Ambush Sparks Arrests

A dramatic incident unfolded in the Chonpara Rehabilitation Centre area of Rupganj upazila in Narayanganj, where a police operation to arrest a fugitive suspect ended in a violent ambush, resulting in the suspect being forcibly taken from custody and several officers injured.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m. on Monday (4 May), during a targeted raid led by a specialised unit of the Narayanganj District Police, accompanied by senior officers and the Officer-in-Charge of Rupganj Police Station. The operation was launched to apprehend Shamim Mia, a wanted individual facing multiple charges including murder, drug trafficking, illegal arms possession, and attacks on law enforcement personnel. Authorities confirmed that he was subject to numerous arrest warrants and had been evading arrest for an extended period.

Following his capture, Shamim Mia was handcuffed and placed inside a police vehicle. However, as the officers prepared to leave the area, a group of his associates quickly gathered and began to obstruct the operation. The situation escalated when the group blocked the police vehicle, damaged its tyres, and physically confronted the officers on duty.

What began as resistance soon turned into a coordinated attack. The assailants reportedly overwhelmed the officers through sheer numbers, creating chaos at the scene. In the ensuing violence, they succeeded in forcibly removing Shamim Mia from police custody and fleeing the location with him.

Several police personnel sustained injuries during the confrontation. Reinforcement units were immediately deployed, managing to regain control of the situation and rescue the injured officers. A rapid follow-up operation was then launched across the locality.

As part of the subsequent crackdown, law enforcement arrested 13 individuals, including Shamim Mia’s wife, Sathi Akter, who is suspected of being directly involved in the incident. Authorities stated that further arrests may follow as investigations continue.
