Second Arrest Over Dog River Killing

Police have arrested another suspect in connection with the widely condemned incident in which a dog was allegedly tied to a brick and thrown into a river from the Nagariakandi Bridge in Narsingdi. The latest arrest brings the total number of people detained in the case to two as investigators continue efforts to identify and apprehend others believed to have been involved.

Shahinara Begum, 52, was arrested at around 6:30 pm on Saturday from the New Bus Stand area of Narsingdi town. She is the widow of the late Abdul Aziz and a resident of Kamargaon village in Narsingdi Sadar upazila.

The Police Headquarters confirmed the arrest in an official statement issued on Saturday night, describing it as part of the ongoing investigation into a case that has generated widespread public outrage following the circulation of a disturbing video on social media.

According to A R M Mamun, Officer-in-Charge of Narsingdi Sadar Model Police Station, investigators identified Shahinara Begum’s alleged involvement after examining video footage of the incident. Based on the evidence gathered, a team from the district Detective Branch (DB) Police conducted an operation that led to her arrest.

Police said the investigation remains active and that further arrests could follow as officers continue to analyse evidence and identify additional suspects.

Earlier, police arrested the principal accused, Mohammad Ali, 25, in connection with the same incident. A case was filed against him under Sections 429 and 34 of the Penal Code, which deal with offences involving the killing or maiming of animals and acts committed with common intention. He was subsequently produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody.

The case came to light on 25 June after a video began circulating widely across social media platforms. The footage allegedly showed a dog with a rope tied around its neck, while a brick was fastened to the other end of the rope. The animal was then thrown into the river from Nagariakandi Bridge in Narsingdi.

The graphic nature of the footage sparked widespread condemnation from members of the public, prompting calls for swift legal action against those responsible. As the video gained traction online, it came to the attention of Narsingdi District Police, who launched an investigation to identify everyone involved.

Police officials said digital evidence, including the viral video, has played a significant role in tracing the suspects. Investigators have been analysing the footage frame by frame alongside other available information to establish the sequence of events and determine the roles played by each individual connected to the incident.

Officer-in-Charge Mamun said police operations are continuing to identify and arrest any remaining suspects.

“The investigation is still underway. We are working to identify everyone involved in the incident and bring them before the law. The legal process against those found responsible will continue in accordance with existing laws,” he said.

The incident has reignited public concern over acts of animal cruelty and the importance of enforcing existing legal provisions against such offences. While the investigation continues, police have reiterated their commitment to ensuring that all individuals found to have participated in the incident are held accountable through due legal process.
